杨志起初拒上梁山,仍想到东京谋职。他因不容于高俅而未能谋到职位,又因杀泼皮牛二被充军。在北京他得到梁中书赏识,并因在比武中战胜周谨、战平索超而被破格提升为提辖。后他又接受了押送生辰纲这一难以完成的任务,并中吴用之计。最终他不得不与鲁智深一同到二龙山落草。杨志的性格中,既有谨慎的一面,又有急躁、粗暴的另一面。杨志走上落草之路,主要应归因于官场的黑暗,他在那个时代难以找到立功边疆、封妻荫子的机会。被贪官用于非正途与被贪官拒用一样,都对杨志的前途有负面影响。

Hoping for a position in Dongjing,Yang Zhi refused to join in Liangshan Group at beginning,but later failed because of offending Gao Qiu. Then he was captured to be a soldier because of killing rogue Niu Er. In Beijing he got appreciated by Liang Zhongshu and was promoted to be a controller after defeating Zhou Jin and Sue Chao in a tilting contest. When he was ordered to protect Shengchengang,he was tricked by Wu Yong. Finally he had to go to Mount Erlongshan. Yang Zhi was cautious but impatient and a little bit rude. His being a bandit should result mainly from the dark officialdom,at that time he could hardly find opportunity to be a meritorious soldier or win a noble position for his family. Either being irregularly used or being refused had a negative impact on the future of Yang Zhi.
