霍桑的代表作《红字》历来被评论家认为是清教思想影响下的一部反映原罪思想的作品。它的主题中不仅透露着堕落与救赎的二元对立,还隐含着灵魂与肉体这一更深层次的二元对立。正是小说主题的双重二元对立性,从而构成了小说巨大的审美与意义张力。
Abstract：The Scarlet Letter,one of Hawthorne's representative works,is always considered as the reflection to original sin under the influence of Puritanism. Its theme reveals not only duality antagonism of depravation and salvation but also soul and body. It is the duality antagonism of the theme that constitutes great aesthetic judgment and the tension of the novel.
